Volunteers will conduct intakes at our tabling sites, effectively connecting community members seeking legal advice to our team of pro-bono attorneys to discuss criminal defense and record clearing needs. Volunteers receive educational opportunities to learn various legal procedures while also observing client consultations. Additionally, in the case that the attorneys collaborating in this project choose to proceed with a case, volunteers have the opportunity to attend court hearings and gain insight into the legal system. This collaboration gives volunteers the chance to gain legal experience by actively engaging in the legal process under the supervision of experienced and licensed legal professionals. This project encourages the establishment of positive interpersonal relationships within and surrounding the Isla Vista and Goleta communities. Students will develop lifelong friendships while working with peers to facilitate a welcoming environment for clients.

Once volunteers are connected, they will sign all necessary confidentiality and liability forms, attend a citation intake workshop facilitated by attorney Joseph Doherty, and will sign up for at least two volunteer shifts per month. All members of our organization are welcome to participate and gain legal volunteer experience.
