UCSB Pre-Law Society
Street Law Clinic

About the Project

Written by Projects Chair, Alyssa Rodriguez

This project aims to provide free legal consultation to students and community members alike, extending accessible legal counsel to the Goleta community regardless of socioeconomic status.

The main goals of the UCSCPLS Street Law Clinic include:
1) Providing free criminal defense consultation to individuals who have been issued an infraction citation;

2) Collecting data on diversion programs offered to community members by law enforcement, specifically the Santa Barbara County Neighborhood Restorative Justice Program, offered by the Santa Barbara County District Attorney Office
3) Providing free criminal record clearing services for Isla Vista and Goleta community members.

Our Partners

The UCSB Pre-Law Society proudly presents our campus wide legal volunteer opportunity with Santa Barbara based People’s Justice Project and California Rural Legal Assistance.

During our tabling hours, community members will be able to connect with former Santa Barbara County Public Defenders and current People’s Justice Project and CRLA attorneys, Joseph Doherty and Renee Lizarraga. Joseph and Renee will be offering pro-bono consultation related to citations and criminal record clearing services for the UCSB and Isla Vista community. Both attorneys are also professors of law, operating the San Luis Obispo College of Law and People’s Justice Project’s Clean Slate Clinic.

How to Get Involved

Volunteers will conduct intakes at our tabling sites, effectively connecting community members seeking legal advice to our team of pro-bono attorneys to discuss criminal defense and record clearing needs. Volunteers receive educational opportunities to learn various legal procedures while also observing client consultations. Additionally, in the case that the attorneys collaborating in this project choose to proceed with a case, volunteers have the opportunity to attend court hearings and gain insight into the legal system. This collaboration gives volunteers the chance to gain legal experience by actively engaging in the legal process under the supervision of experienced and licensed legal professionals. This project encourages the establishment of positive interpersonal relationships within and surrounding the Isla Vista and Goleta communities. Students will develop lifelong friendships while working with peers to facilitate a welcoming environment for clients.

If you are a UCSB student interested in participating in this opportunity and joining our family of volunteers, please send a brief email to our organization at ucsbprelawsociety@gmail.com, or email our Projects Chair directly at emilyhan@ucsb.edu. Once volunteers are connected, they will sign all necessary confidentiality and liability forms, attend a citation intake workshop facilitated by attorney Joseph Doherty, and will sign up for at least two volunteer shifts per month. All members of our organization are welcome to participate and gain legal volunteer experience.
